A phony commercial for a liquidized beef product was just what the world craved in 2008. The number 6 spot on the year’s popularity chart goes to “Beef ‘n Go,” the tasty ad created by video humor site Smosh. The commercial spoof was received so enthusiastically that it spin off its own follow-up video featuring a full Beef ‘n Go theme song.

With just over 12 million views, the guys from Smosh answered the long-standing question: Where’s the beef? (It’s in a plastic tube. Yum.)

Strategies for Building an Audience

About a year ago, I discussed different strategies for making video ads go viral. Since then, most agencies and brands have gone beyond the one-hit-wonder viral video craze, and are now looking to create richer, deeper, online brand content experiences.

A lot has happened over the past year. New digital studios like Deca…have consistently put out great new original programs. Despite the economic turmoil, brands have become a lot less timid about partnering with content creators. And, above all, new distribution technologies and measurement companies are helping to make everything a bit more manageable.

Outside the Frame: Mommy Talk. Mommy Listen?

I should say right off the bat that I don’t have kids. So what am I doing at Momversation, a video blog about the experiences of motherhood? Well, I’m an avid reader of Dooce, Heather Armstrong’s popular blog, and she’s one of Momversation’s contributors. She recently linked to an episode about handling political disagreements with loved ones — a relevant topic regardless of your parenting status — and I decided to check it out. I was intrigued by some of the other episode titles, like “Sex After Baby” and “Childbirth Choices,” and was surprised to find myself sucked in…

Watching Rebecca Woolf talk to me (she sits so close to the camera, it feels like that’s what she’s doing) about how motherhood changed her sexuality, or Daphne Brogdon talk about how judgmental people are of women who have C-sections, I did feel a connection to motherhood I hadn’t felt before. Watching these women talk to each other, and to me, I couldn’t help but relate with them — because first and foremost, their struggles seemed like the struggles of women, not of a special breed of human beings called “moms.”

iTunes Best of 2008 Doesn’t Match YouTube Numbers

The good people at Apple’s iTunes have released their annual top-seller and best of lists for 2008…Unlike last year’s YouTube list of most memorable videos, whose honorees were chosen via a mysterious “formula” that took into consideration “view counts, most shared, most discussed, top rated, and general popularity,” Apple doesn’t let you know how these programs made it on the lists.

In this new segment of the show, Zand will be doing an introduction to soloing in Northrend. This week he starts off in Howling Fjords but not before we had a chance to sit down and talk with him about Project Lore, Soloing and a little place called Gamerville.
